At the heart of the new retail departures area at Auckland International Airport in New Zealand is Pou Manawa, a huge tree of architectural fabric onto which colour and traditional Maori designs are reflected using Martin Exterior 410 wash lights and Martin smartMAC image projecting moving heads.

Ignite Architects developed the idea of a 'heart' space - an interactive and engaging area that people could gravitate to - and, as much of the imagery symbolizing what New Zealanders hold dear is focused on trees, the Pou Manawa was born.

"We had an exhaustive period of early testing to get the best fixture for the projection," says Chris McKenzie of Martin distributor Kenderdine Electrical. "We had other colour changing fixtures specified but when the Exterior 410s became available we changed the specification to use them. The 410s were the perfect solution for the wash units and whilst an indoor installation, the passive cooling on the units was a major bonus."

Working with the Exterior 410s are smartMACs, a bright profile light and image projector with six indexable rotating gobos. The designs float across the complex patterned internal surface of the tree in a continuous 360-degree rotation.

"The smartMAC won out for its long lamp life and low maintenance needs," states McKenzie. "We had a large area of south-facing glass pouring light into the area and after treatment of the glass, the smartMAC was able to generate enough light to do the job successfully."

Twenty-four smartMACs and a like number of Exterior 410s are used in the installation, which runs 21 hours per day, 365 days per year. Programming was done on a Martin Maxxyz PC and Martin M1 console with initial design and renderings completed using the Martin ShowDesigner. All gobos are Apollo stock steel and glass or custom glass.

Casio XJ-H1700 and XJ-H1750 DLP Projectors

Building on its 2nd generation light engine, Casio has expanded its Pro High Brightness Series with two new projectors. The XJ-H1700 and XJ-H1750 both have a 4000 lumen output and feature laser and LED hybrid light source technology offering lamp-free, eco-friendly data projection at a fraction of the cost of traditional projectors. Casio's laser & LED hybrid light source combines blue laser light and a fluorescent element to generate a high output of green light. The green light, blue laser light, and the light emitted by a red LED are projected through a DLP chip which, in turn, is passed through the projection lens to form an image. This technology achieves an increase in color spectrum compared with a mercury lamp, while lowering a projector's total cost of ownership and maximizing investment.

Additionally, Casio's Pro projectors are DLP 3D ready and can display 3D content from a 3D capable computer. Professionals can change the bland world of presentations by engaging audiences on an entirely new level with vivid and exciting images that jump of the screen -- essentially bringing the presentation to life.

Equipped with a network connection via wireless and wired LAN capabilities, the XJ-H1700 and XJ-H1750 incorporate enhanced audio features such as a large output speaker. From the biggest theaters to the smallest rooms, Casio understands the need to communicate effectively. Therefore, Casio has increased audio power to 10 watts for the Pro line to ensure that sound travels in every type of setting. They are also fitted with an RGB-Out port, multiple audio inputs and an audio output for connection to a separate audio system.

Furthermore, the XJ-H1750 is Interactive Whiteboard ready which enables users to transform any surface into an interactive workspace. The optional pen and software allow presenters to write and annotate on the screen or switch to "mouse" mode and control the PC, a perfect tool to incorporate in training sessions, lectures, meetings, etc.

Canon Intros Ultra-Short-Throw Multimedia Projector

Canon has introduced the LV-8235 UST Multimedia Projector, an ultra-short-throw projector, capable of projecting an 80-inch picture from a distance of only 1.04 feet, according to the company. The LV-8235 UST can sit on a table or be mounted horizontally or vertically on a wall, ceiling, or floor for a variety of 3D or 2D display applications, including educational presentations, advertising/digital signage, or museum/arcade rear-projection screens.

The Canon LV-8235 has a rated brightness of 2,500 lumens, a 2,000:1 contrast ratio, and native WXGA (1280 x 800) resolution at a 16:10 aspect ratio, suitable for HD video or graphics created on widescreen laptops.

The Canon LV-8235 UST Multimedia Projector can be used for either normal 2D display or stereoscopic 3D display, depending upon user preference. The frame-sequential method of 3D display employed by the projector switches parallax images intended for the left eye and right eye at very high speed and requires the use of active-shutter type glasses.

The Canon LV-8235 directs the images it generates through the projection lens and onto a built-in reflection mirror for loop-back through a projection window. This configuration makes it possible to use a table or a floor as a projection screen. The ultra-short throw capability also allows users to install the projector in a wide range of compact positions, including, through the use of approved brackets and attachments, horizontal or vertical wall or ceiling mounts. Examples of ultra-short throw applications include cost-effective 3D or 2D rear-projection in museums or arcades, or digital signage use in which store-front product promotions can be projected onto the sidewalk or the floor of a shopping mall to attract the attention of people walking by. The Canon LV-8235 UST Multimedia Projector is also suitable for many classroom applications where proximity to the whiteboard or screen helps to minimize the possibility of obstructions to projected images.

The LV-8235 UST Multimedia Projector’s ultra-short throw capabilities and close proximity to the screen also minimize shadows as well as glare that could shine in an education or business presenter’s eyes. Computer synchronization is an automatic feature that turns on when a computer is connected to the projector and an input signal is detected. The feature then automatically synchronizes the projector with the computer’s screen resolution. Direct Power-On is useful for inaccessible ceiling-installed projectors, as it automatically turns on the projector when the power cord is plugged into an outlet, eliminating the need to press the power switch on the unit. Other features include HDMI digital input, a built-in 10-watt speaker, an RJ-45 network connection, an RS-232C serial connection, and quiet operation (28dBA) in Eco mode.

The Canon LV-8235 UST Multimedia Projector is currently available at a list price of $1,799. It is backed by Canon U.S.A.’s three-year limited warranty and exclusive Projector Protection Program (“Triple P”), a free service program that provides a loaner projector of equal or greater value in the event that a qualifying unit is in need of repair.

KanexPro CubeUp Turns 2D Video Into 3D

Here’s an interesting product I somehow missed at last month’s CEDIA expo. It’s the KanexPro CubeUp. The name really tells you nothing, which is odd because the CubeUp really does a lot.

First, it’s a 4 X 1 HDMI switcher (four HDMI inputs, one HDMI output) that lets you plug in multiple HDMI sources to a display device via only one HDMI input. This way you’re using the Kanex unit to do your source switching rather than your projector or TV. This of course makes installation much easier, particularly if you’re using a projector, because you only have to run one HDMI cable up the wall and across the ceiling instead of four. Most decent home theater receivers do this too, but this switcher goes a step further.

The really interesting things about the CubeUp (it’s not cube shaped by the way) are it’s processing tricks. In addition to being a switcher (there are tons of these on the market from companies like Griffin, IOgear and Accell), the Kanex is a 2D to 3D video converter. It will take standard 2D content from your Blu-ray player, game console, DVR, etc. and convert it to a 3D source for display on your 3D projector or TV.

The company says that the user can adjust 3D picture attributes such as depth and scaling via the CubeUp’s remote. In addition, the CubeUp will upscale the source resolution from 480p p to 1080p.

There’s also a pass-through mode that sends the video signal straight to the display if you don’t want the CubeUp to do any monkey business.
And being a 3D converter, it supports HDMI version 1.4a.

I see this fitting in much better with projector-based theaters than with flat panel TVs because many 3D TVs sold now already have a 2D to 3D feature. Few, if any, projectors do though.

Remember, this isn’t turning a non-3D TV or projector into a 3D one. It’s converting the source. There was a product called 3D Now shown at the CEDIA expo that did the other trick, but the results were very difficult to judge in that setting. If you missed it, you can read about it here.

How does it perform? I have no idea, but the company offered to send me one to try out, so stay tuned to for more.

NEC adds PX Series to professional projectors

The heavy-duty projectors are designed for fixed installations in higher educational environments or critical signage applications or events.

Based on DMD DLP Chip technology, the PX Series boasts up to WUXGA (1920x1200) resolution, a contrast ration of 2,100:1 and a brightness of between 7,000 and 8,000 ANSI lumen, dependent on model. It also incorporates 10-bit HQV colour processing.

Flexibility on signage applications can be offered via support for the NEC built-in STv2 Single board computer, which utilises Intel’s OPS.

As well as DisplayPort support, all the projectors feature a range of display input options, including HDMI, S-video, RGB and RCA connectors, and include NEC’s Projector Viewer function, which allow users to show PowerPoint files, PDF files, images or movies via the network without any need for a presentation PC or directly from an USB memory stick.
As well as being able to stream content over the network, administrators are able to monitor and control these projectors through a wired connection or over an optional Wi-Fi module.
The PX Series units will be shipped without a lens. Current NP4000/NP4100 lenses can be used for the PX800X and PX700W models, while new lenses include a lens memory function, which adjusts the lens position automatically, and individually, according to the input signal or previous settings.

As well as a lens shutter, the new range includes an automatic dual-lamp system for safe operation and, with NEC’s ECO Mode technology, the PX Series projectors' lamp life is extended up to 2,500 hours, while the filter needs to be changed after 10,000 hours of use.

InFocus announced the release of five new projectors in the IN100 series. Metro-friendly proportions, now with an even greater panoramic view

The new 2012 Fiat 500c combines city-friendly proportions, iconic Cinquecento cues and a fully power-operated cloth top — all wrapped in modern Italian styling that conveys simplicity and joy.

At the front, the new Fiat 500c model’s signature “whiskers and logo” face features circular projector headlamps and lower park lamps that resemble the latest Fiat models while paying homage to the distinctive elements of the original Cinquecento in stylistic harmony. To show its road-holding stance, the cabrio’s front fascia features chromed trim and tapers outward toward its large wheel arches, while a horizontal cooling duct adds design character and additional engine cooling.

Differentiating the Fiat 500c from the hatchback model is a slightly longer windshield that is designed to provide passengers with a maximized outward view. In addition, the windshield elegantly conceals the reinforced upper-cross member that ensures the cabrio’s rigid body structure during spirited driving.

From the side, the Fiat 500c’s pillars stand out and present strong arches, while the shape of the soft top provides a more slender silhouette compared with the hatchback version. Below, the black or available chromed belt molding, the signature body-side A-line slopes forward for a dynamic look, while its lateral section features clean surfaces and flared wheel arches to deliver a modern interpretation of the historic Cinquecento. To keep its design simple and modern, the hood-to-fender seam is elegantly cut at the A-line. Filling the wheel wells are four unique wheel designs, all with the “500” logo on the center caps. For more design character, bi-halogen projector headlamps and clear-lens taillamps are visible from the side profile thanks to the way the cabrio’s rounded sides link up to the front and rear. Providing enhanced durability, new lower-sill spats protect the body-side from stone chips.

At the rear of the new Fiat 500c, a roof-mounted and color-matched spoiler improves aerodynamics, while elegantly integrating the center high-mounted stop lamp that cleverly functions with the roof up or down. Separating the premium cloth top from the liftgate is a chrome trim accent that also highlights the cabrio’s width. To keep the rear design clean, the lighting functions are divided vertically following the liftgate’s cutline. Finishing off the iconic styling of the Fiat 500c is a chromed license plate brow, a motif from the original Cinquecento that was inspired by a bicycle saddle.
