Police in Lerwick are advising the motoring public to bear in mind the effects on traffic Up-Helly-A’ will cause on Tuesday.
As
in previous years, police are putting measures in place to try and
minimise traffic congestion, particularly during the morning and
evening.
Residents in the affected streets are asked to remove
their vehicles from the road and leave them outwith the parade route if
they require to use them during the processions.
The morning
procession will assemble at Islesburgh at around 8.30am and will march
to the Toll Clock Shopping Centre via King Harald Street, King Haakon
Street, St Sunniva Street and Gilbertson Road. They will stop and enter
the Toll Clock via the lane between Frank Williamson’s and the old fire
station.
While this is happening the galley will make its way
from the Galley Shed at St Sunniva Street, down Gilbertson Road, onto
North Road and will stop at the British Legion to await the Jarl’s
Squad.Nitrogen Controller and Digital dry cabinet with good quality.
After
meeting with management at the Toll Clock, the Jarl’s Squad will
re-form and march to the British legion where they will meet up with the
galley and march to the Bressay Slip, arriving at approximately
10.05am.
Traffic will be subject to delay as the Jarl’s Squad
and the galley make their way through the town in the morning. Motorists
are strongly advised to avoid this area if possible and use alternative
routes.

Prince Alfred Street, King Harald Street, Harbour Street and Market
Street will be subject to parking restrictions all day. They will be
closed to all traffic from about 4pm until after the area is cleared
following the burning ceremony.
Arrangements have been made for a
limited amount of space for disabled people’s vehicles on King Erik
Street outside King Erik House. Police are appealing to people to arrive
early as no spaces can be guaranteed.
A one-way traffic system
from north to south will be in force in Burgh Road. Anyone parking in
Burgh Road before the system is introduced is asked to park facing
Scalloway Road to ensure a safe and speedy exit from the area. Motorists
parking in Gilbertson Road are “strongly advised” to park facing
northwards, exiting via the North Road.
A police spokesperson
said: “These measures are intended to enable people to enjoy the
spectacle to the full and for a safe and rapid dispersal of traffic
afterwards
“All motorists are asked in their own interests to
comply with these measures. In recent years, they have successfully
minimised traffic congestions and delays.
“It may appear that
the restrictions imposed come into effect some time before the various
parades, but drivers can be assured that this is for good reason.
“Every
year the police have to spend many hours trying to trace drivers who
have left their vehicles in defiance of the no parking signs. While
these drivers may intend to return and move their cars before the main
parade, the police cannot be sure of this.
“For safety reasons
they cannot afford to wait until the last moment to start the
time-consuming task to trace the owner and have the vehicle moved.
“Any
vehicles parked in contravention of the traffic regulation orders will
be liable to be towed away and the driver will be liable for the cost,
as well as prosecution.”

New Car Models
Chrysler’s Mopar division continues to show off its customization skills with the introduction of four new vehicles, all of which will be available in fall 2012 as stage kits or, for those who like to do things themselves, can be configured “a la carte” from the Mopar parts catalogue.
To celebrate its 75th anniversary, the parts and accessories division of Chrysler (Mopar stands for MOtor PARts) recently unveiled the Mopar ’12 300 (a customized Chrysler 300 sedan), Fiat 500 “Stinger,” Mopar Jeep Compass “True North” and Dodge Dart “GTS 210 Tribute.” All will be on display to the public at the 2012 Chicago Auto Show.
“These head-turning ‘Moparized’ vehicles show how we can go to the next level of personalization,” said Pietro Gorlier, President and CEO of Mopar, Chrysler Group LLC’s service, parts and customer-care brand. “With our best-in-class offerings of parts and accessories, we give our customers every opportunity to further enhance the appearance and performance of their vehicles.”
The blacked out Mopar ‘12 300 transforms the Chrysler 300 flagship sedan into a performance tribute to celebrate Mopar’s 75th anniversary with unique appointments, select high-performance parts and appearance items such as a black chrome seven bar grille, blue A-line body stripes and 20-inch forged aluminum gloss black wheels.
An exclusive engine cover hints at the 363 horsepower 5.7-litre HEMI V8 harnessed in by a proven five-speed W5A580 automatic transmission controlled by a unique Mopar shifter. The rear differential has been boosted from 3.06:1 to a 3.91:1 final-drive ratio for enhanced acceleration – enabling 0-60 mph blasts in the low 5-second range. Handling is entrusted to a performance-tuned suspension with 42% stiffer front and 23% stiffer rear spring rates compared to the regular Chrysler 300.
The interior is monotone black with blue accents throughout. Mopar’s Katzkin perforated leather is used for the front power adjustable front heated seats and rear heated perches. The steering wheel (with die-cast paddles for shifting) and shifter handle are also wrapped in leather.
The dash and centre console feature matte carbon hydrographic inserts, while piano black forms the backdrop on the centre stack, gauge cluster, door panels and steering wheel spokes. UConnect touch screen display controls the infotainment system, as well as the 506-watt Alpine nine-speaker surround sound system.
For safety, the SafetyTec Group includes adaptive HID headlights with automatic levelling, Forward Collision Warning with adaptive-cruise control, Blind-spot monitoring with Rear Cross Path detection, ParkSense front and rear sensors, LED rear fog lamps, exterior mirrors with supplemental turn signals and puddle lamp. Additional safety features include rain-sense wipers and SmartBeam headlamps.
Only 500 are scheduled to be built inBrampton, Ont., and will be priced from $49,700 in the U.S. Buyers get a personalized owner kit in a customized Mopar box, Mopar-branded key fobs and Mopar ‘12 300 merchandise. The kit will include an original sketch of the car signed by the designer, a certificate with the vehicle identification number (VIN), exact date of manufacture and the series number, and a brochure highlighting the unique features of the vehicle.
The Dodge Dart GTS 210 Tribute picks up several matte-black trim pieces, including a lower chin spoiler, side sills, rear spoiler and rear-diffuser panel. A lightweight carbon-fibre hood with large air scoop and 18-inch, 10-spoke forged alloy titanium-coloured wheels. Inside, there is Ruby Red leather on the seats, steering wheel, door panels, center armrest and map-pocket inserts, accented with black stitching, and Piano Black trim on the shifter, cupholder and the dash-vent bezels. Maximizing fuel/air mix and spark advance, with an improved air-flow intake and low back-pressure exhaust takes the 2.4-litre MultiAir four-cylinder engine output up to 210 horsepower (from 184).
Like the Dart customization, the Fiat 500 “Stinger” also integrates two Mopar stage kits that deliver bold styling appointments and select high-performance parts. Giallo (yellow) exterior paint combines with unique blackened exterior and interior appointments to amplify the coupe/hatchback’s athletic styling. The Fiat signature “whiskers and logo” face and circular projector headlamps are finished in Black Chrome, as are the side mirror caps and door handles. The sides and roof get vinyl black checker graphics. Seventeen-inch Abarth Hyper Black aluminum wheels are shod with 205/40R17 performance tires for better grip on the power provided by the enhanced 1.4-litre MultiAir four-cylinder engine, while performance cross-drilled brakes bring things to a halt quickly, when needed. The yellow/black motif is carried inside, accented with carbon-fibre decaled instrument panel, Alcantara seat centres and a gloss black shifter ball.

Canon REALiS WUX5000 / D Installation LCOS Projectors
Canon introduced its brightest-ever, 5000-lumen REALiS Installation LCOS Projectors, which are designed to provide exceptional display performance for a wide range of professional AV markets. Incorporating multiple features for convenient installation and maintenance, the new REALiS WUX5000 and WUX5000 D Installation LCOS Projectors utilize Canon's unique fourth-generation AISYS (Aspectual Illumination System) optical technology to maximize the display capabilities of their advanced LCOS (Liquid Crystal on Silicon) imaging panels. This combination enables the projectors to deliver higher-than-HD-resolution (1920 x 1200) widescreen video and still images with an aspect ratio of 16:10 and a high brightness level of 5000 lumens. Pico projectors are all the rage, but if you need some premium functionality in a package that’s more luggabble than pocketable, Panasonic’s got your back with a trio of new models. The PT-LW25HU, PT-LX30HU and PT-LX26HU projectors (catchy!) weigh in at a scant 6.6 pounds each, with dimensions that are just barely bigger than a college textbook at 13.7 by 4.1 by 9.7 inches. Ranging in price from $849 to $1,099, the projectors slide into the middle range of Panasonic’s line.
The cheapest is the PT-LX26HU, which makes due with a 2600 lumen lamp and a maximum resolution of 1024×768. Its brother the PT-LX30HU bumps up the lumens to 3000 with a $1099 price tag, but everything else remains the same. If you’re up for a wider experience in your semi-portable projection lifestyle, the PT-LW25HU increases the resolution to 1280×800 with a 16:10 aspect ration, but the lumen rating is lowered to 2500. The more cinematic of the three newbies retails for $899.

Epson 2011 – New Projector Models Revealed at IFA
Last week, the world leader in projectors, Epson, were kind enough to invite us along to the launch of their new product range but also to the industry trade fair (IFA) in Berlin, Germany.
The IFA is a huge technology event where all of the well known brands both in your home and in the land of corporate events showcase their products but the main point of the event for me was to check out what Epson had to offer in their 2011 / 2012 product range and I have to say I was very pleasantly surprised.
You’re not able to go anywhere in the world of technology at the moment without hitting the topic of 3D head on and this year’s IFA was the place to be for all things 3D. The industry is currently rather oversubscribed with 3D products but Epson had purposefully held back their new range of 3D systems as they didn’t believe that there was enough content to support their products. That has obviously changed in 2011 as the range of Epson projectors that were launched all feature 3D.
During their presentation, we were told that over the next three years, 45 3D movies are scheduled for theatrical release making the time for 3D projectors in the home even more relevant. Two of the projectors, the EH-TW9000 and EH-TW9000W feature a 2D to 3D conversion feature which could be a rather nice and interesting stopgap between 3D with glasses and glasses-less technology.
I was rather sceptical on how this 2D to 3D conversion would actually look and as yet, that scepticism remains as we weren’t able to see it demoed but hopefully I’ll get sent a review version of theprojector and will be able to give the 2D to 3D a thorough test.
In the meantime, here’s the info on how the 2D – 3D conversion actually works according to the clever chaps at Epson:
Epson’s new high-end projectors EH-TW9000 and EH-TW9000W allow you to easily convert 2D high definition content into Full HD 3D at the touch of a button. An internal microchip (the Integrated Circuit or IC chip) analyses the image and splits it into various levels of depth, which at the end it will re-combine in order to create a sense of perspective in the scene. At the same time all the objects in the 2D picture are identified in order to develop an embossed model of each. It uses these two techniques to simulate the ‘parallax’ images (the paired set of left and right eye images). The resulting image is then put back together by theprojector and shown on the screen, so creating 3D pictures which are as natural as if you were looking out of your window. For users, this means they can enlarge the bank of films, TV shows or games to watch in 3D significantly, with ease.
The 2011 model that was also a surprise to many was the Epson MG-850HD which is the new home consumer model. It’s extremely lightweight, relatively cheap, has a 5000-hourlamp life and features and iPod / iPad / iPhone / iWhatever dock allowing you to play video and watch photos with friends. The projector is also equipped with two 10 watt speakers which enables you to be able to take the projector with you on your travels without the need for extra peripherals like speakers.
By far the most impressive feature for me was the brand new wireless projectors that Epson have created with model numbers EH-TW6000w (contrast ratio 40,000: 1) and the flagship model EH-TW9000w which boasts a display contrast of 200,000: 1. These two projectors come with a transmitter device with theprojector which talks to the display unit allowing you to broadcast your images from up to 10m away. I can see this as being a fantastic feature as let’s face it, anything which means fewer cables can only be a good thing. All the projectors in this new range feature the standard component inputs that you’d expect to see on a modern projector with multiple HDMI sockets, and VGA / DVI inputs.
From the demos that we saw, this new wireless functionality was able to transmit full HD visuals in real-time to theprojector unit itself. The projector really was amazing and will hopefully revolutionise the way in which we use projectors. I asked the question about having multiple wireless devices in one place at one time and was told that each projector is on a different channel meaning that you run large events now without having to run VGA cables across large distances. The 10m range is the standard at the moment but I’m sure this will increase as the technology advances.
The IFA is a huge technology event where all of the well known brands both in your home and in the land of corporate events showcase their products but the main point of the event for me was to check out what Epson had to offer in their 2011 / 2012 product range and I have to say I was very pleasantly surprised.
You’re not able to go anywhere in the world of technology at the moment without hitting the topic of 3D head on and this year’s IFA was the place to be for all things 3D. The industry is currently rather oversubscribed with 3D products but Epson had purposefully held back their new range of 3D systems as they didn’t believe that there was enough content to support their products. That has obviously changed in 2011 as the range of Epson projectors that were launched all feature 3D.
During their presentation, we were told that over the next three years, 45 3D movies are scheduled for theatrical release making the time for 3D projectors in the home even more relevant. Two of the projectors, the EH-TW9000 and EH-TW9000W feature a 2D to 3D conversion feature which could be a rather nice and interesting stopgap between 3D with glasses and glasses-less technology.

2013 Chevrolet Malibu Revealed on Facebook
General Motors has just unveiled the all-new 2013 Chevrolet Malibu in a “Live Reveal” on Facebook. With heavy styling influence from the Chevy Camaro, the 2013 Chevrolet Malibu will make its debut across 100 markets worldwide by early 2012.
The 2013 Chevrolet Malibu will come a “sporty, sophisticated and easy to live with” interior, that will feature an all-new dual cockpit, intuitively located controls and ample storage space. With luxurious use of leather, chrome and wood accents on the interior, the 2013 Malibu offers one of the most impressive interiors on any mid-size sedan. The vehicle meanwhile offers a more spacious cabin that comes with almost 4 cubic feet of additional interior space, while also providing more shoulder and hip room.
The 2013 Malibu will also feature a high-resolution seven-inch touch screen radio display with impressive UI controls. The touch screen display on the Malibu can make way to a six-inch deep storage behind it – a feature that will be seen in the U.S. for the first time. The 2013 Chevrolet Malibu will also come equipped with Chevrolet’s new MyLink infotainment package that comes with OnStar security, while also allowing users to integrate their smartphone’s music services like Pandora Internet Radio and Stitcher SmartRadio with the it.
The 2013 Chevrolet Malibu will feature an all-new 2.5L four-cylinder direct injection engine in North America. The engine will be mated to a Hydra-Matic 6T40 six-speed automatic transmission, and can generate up to 190 hp and 180 lb.-ft. of torque. The 2013 Malibu is expected to deliver class leading mileage at up to 35 mpg on the highway. While no performance numbers have been specified as of now, Chevrolet representatives promise that it will beat the figures of the current generation Malibu.
The “Camaro Influence” on the 2013 Chevrolet Malibu cannot be over stated – from the low-profile head lamps to the optional projector HID lamps, the dual-element tail lamp frames, the Chevrolet bow-tie badges on the front and rear, and a range of 17, 18 and 19 inch wheels all brings out the sporty side that its Camaro counterpart made a standard. “The exterior design of the all-new Malibu carries DNA from its sister vehicles, the Camaro and Corvette, to bring a sporty sensibility to the family sedan segment,” said Bryan Nesbitt, executive director for General Motors exterior design.
While the 2013 Chevrolet Malibu is slated to make its debut at the Shanghai Auto Show today, it will make its U.S. debut at the upcoming New York International Auto Show on Wednesday, April 20th. Although we will get to know more about the 2013 Malibu in the next week or so, Chevrolet announced that it wont hit dealerships until some time in early 2012.
