Epson's E-TORL puts projectors in a new green light

The Epson Twin Optimized Reflection Lamp (E-TORL) is probably the projector industry’s most significant innovation in lamp design since the arrival of the modern multimedia projector. Pioneered by Epson in 2005 and found in almost every Epson projector today, the E-TORL is a projector lamp that features an elliptically-shaped reflector with an additional sub reflector unit to achieve an unprecedented 20% improvement in light projection efficiency. This results in lower power consumption, cooler operation and longer operational life compared to conventional projector lamps.

A projector lamp is basically composed of a burner element and a reflector. Conventional projector lamps feature a semi-circular, parabolic reflector shape that does not efficiently reflect light generated from the lamp’s burner element toward the projector’s optical system. This is because the curvature of the conventional lamp’s reflector allows a significant portion of the light to be reflected away from the light path of the optical unit, where it is lost as heat. If a projector’s light source loses too much light through such inefficiency, the picture it produces will appear dim. With the goal of radically improving the efficiency of a projector’s lamp, the Epson visual instrument research team developed a completely new design for the projector lamp system, resulting in the E-TORL.

In the E-TORL, the parabolic reflector has been replaced with an elliptically shaped one that reflects light beams to the optical system far more efficiently. In addition, Epson engineers added a sub-reflector unit to the E-TORL, which further improves efficiency by collecting and channeling the light from the area in centre of the lamp into the optics.

The E-TORL’s innovative new design is smaller than a standard lamp, yet it runs cooler, more efficiently, and brighter. The reduced size allows Epson to shrink the projector’s optical engine, resulting in an overall reduction in the projector’s size.

The E-TORL design allows almost 100% of the light from the lamp to be collected and channeled through to the projector’s optical system. This gives the E-TORL an overall improvement in efficiency of 20% when compared to a conventional lamp, helping users to save on power costs. In practical terms, this higher efficiency means that an E-TORL can provide an output of 170 watts, versus 136 watts from an ordinary lamp with the same input.

The E-TORL runs cooler than a standard lamp of similar wattage because the design incorporates an air gap between the reflector and the burner. This cooler operation also enables further benefits: 1) this means that the cooling fan of the projector does not need to spin as fast, further reducing power consumption.

Everyone wants to meet, but not on the same terms

At least two Alexandria City Council members continue to ask Mayor Jacques M. Roy to have representatives of his administration attend council meetings to give reports, make presentations and take questions.

For the past nine months, Roy has supplemented his staff's written responses to council agenda items with a televised briefing held Fridays before Tuesday council meetings.

At the mayor's briefings, staff members deliver reports, including PowerPoint presentations made by Public Works Director T.W. Thompson at the past three briefings.

At last Tuesday's council meeting, a video of Thompson's presentation on code enforcement services was shown on a projector in the Council Chambers. The video included the slides from Thompson's presentation, but not the audio of Thompson speaking.

Council President Roosevelt L. Johnson and District 2 Councilwoman Mitzi Gibson said they would have preferred that Thompson make the presentation in person.

"I would hope and think someone from the administration would have been here to give this report," Johnson said.

District 4 Councilman Harry B. Silver said there are plenty of opportunities for council members to view the reports.

They can attend the briefings live -- Silver, Chuck Fowler and Jim Villard typically attend -- or watch them as they are rebroadcast on Channel 4, the city's government-access channel.

Silver said he couldn't attend the latest briefing in person, so he watched it on Channel 4.

Roy started the pre-council meeting briefings in February in response to a perceived "lack of decorum and civility" at City Council meetings.

"We've had to make a hard choice," Roy said at the time. "We would rather be in the meetings ... (but) we will not do it when there is not decorum and civility."

Roy has urged council members to attend the Friday briefings "to engage in the discussion," particularly those council members whose committees have items coming up on the next council meeting agenda.

"This way," Roy said at the time, "the chairs can take back the information, the public can witness the exchange, and with the additional reports given before the full or 'general' council meeting -- and available as the basis for discussion at the Friday exchange -- we will be that much more informed."

Casio XJ-H1700 and XJ-H1750 DLP Projectors

Building on its 2nd generation light engine, Casio has expanded its Pro High Brightness Series with two new projectors. The XJ-H1700 and XJ-H1750 both have a 4000 lumen output and feature laser and LED hybrid light source technology offering lamp-free, eco-friendly data projection at a fraction of the cost of traditional projectors. Casio's laser & LED hybrid light source combines blue laser light and a fluorescent element to generate a high output of green light. The green light, blue laser light, and the light emitted by a red LED are projected through a DLP chip which, in turn, is passed through the projection lens to form an image. This technology achieves an increase in color spectrum compared with a mercury lamp, while lowering a projector's total cost of ownership and maximizing investment.

Additionally, Casio's Pro projectors are DLP 3D ready and can display 3D content from a 3D capable computer. Professionals can change the bland world of presentations by engaging audiences on an entirely new level with vivid and exciting images that jump of the screen -- essentially bringing the presentation to life.

Equipped with a network connection via wireless and wired LAN capabilities, the XJ-H1700 and XJ-H1750 incorporate enhanced audio features such as a large output speaker. From the biggest theaters to the smallest rooms, Casio understands the need to communicate effectively. Therefore, Casio has increased audio power to 10 watts for the Pro line to ensure that sound travels in every type of setting. They are also fitted with an RGB-Out port, multiple audio inputs and an audio output for connection to a separate audio system.

Furthermore, the XJ-H1750 is Interactive Whiteboard ready which enables users to transform any surface into an interactive workspace. The optional pen and software allow presenters to write and annotate on the screen or switch to "mouse" mode and control the PC, a perfect tool to incorporate in training sessions, lectures, meetings, etc.

Panasonic projectors win CRN categories

Panasonic's projectors have come top of their category at the CRN 2011 Tech Innovator Awards.

The company's PT-DZ570 Series projectors came top in the Display-Projection category, thanks to their reliability and flexibility.

Panasonic's proprietary Vivid Color Control technology and Lamp Modulation Drive System in a one-chip DLPTM projector allow the systems to produce bright and vivid colours with the help of the 4,500 lumens of brightness from the projector lamp.

In addition, the Daylight ViewTM Premium feature means that the gadgets can measure the surrounding illumination with a built-in ambient light sensor and correct the images in real-time.

Sheila O'Neil, vice-president of channel sales at Panasonic, commented: “These awards are a testament to our dedication to providing our channel partners and end-users with customised, innovative, reliable solutions to meet a variety of professional applications and environments.”

The projectors have the added benefit of a new cooling system that permits them to be used in ambient temperatures of up to 45 degrees Celsius. Combined with the dust-resistant design of the device, this helps lower maintenance costs and reduce downtime.

Even once lamp replacement is required, there is no need to remove the whole projector from its mount as there is a convenient location near the back of the gadget that allows the lamp to be removed separately.

Projector

If it weren't for its 4,000-lumen brightness rating, the Optoma TW762 ($1,100 street) would be a fairly typical lightweight projector. Built around a DLP-based WXGA (1,280 by 800) engine, it weighs in at 6.4 pounds. On the other hand, the 4,000 lumens pegs it as being suitable for a mid- to large-size conference room or classroom, and bright enough to leave the lights on. That makes it notably bright for a projector that you can easily carry with you, and of obvious interest to anyone who can make use of the bright image, whether they need the portability or not.

As I pointed out in my review of the Editors' Choice WXGA Optoma TW610ST ($1,000 street, 4 stars), projectors in the TW762's weight class are generally less likely to wind up as constant traveling companions than they are to be permanently installed or put on a cart for room-to-room portability. However, Optoma includes a soft carrying case with the TW762, and the high brightness will give it special appeal for portable applications with a particular need for a bright projector. That's particularly true considering that the 4,000-lumen TW762 is a half pound lighter than the 3,000-lumen TW610ST.

Setting up the TW762 is absolutely standard, with a manual focus and manual 1.2x zoom. The back panel offers a reasonably full set of connectors, including an HDMI 1.3 port for a computer or video source, two VGA inputs for computers or component video, one pass-through monitor port, and both an S-Video and a composite video port.

In my tests, the TW762 was appropriately bright for its rating. The 78-inch wide (92-inch diagonal) image I tested with was easily bright enough to stand up to the ambient light in a typical office or classroom. The projector is well suited, in short, for throwing a reasonably large, bright image even with the lights on.

The projector's data image quality is best described as acceptable, but a touch short of top tier. On our standard suite of DisplayMate tests the color balance was a little off, with supposedly neutral grays showing a distinctly greenish tinge in midtones. In addition, although most colors were suitably bright and vibrant, yellow was just a touch mustard-colored. On the other hand, both black text on a white background and white text on a black background were crisp and readable even at the smallest sizes we test with.

With video images, the TW762 handled skin tones well and did better than most data projectors with shadow detail (maintaining details based on shading in dark areas). I saw just a touch of posterization (colors changing suddenly where they should change gradually), but only in scenes that many projectors have problems with. On the minus side, however, I also saw unusually obvious noise in the image.

One other important problem was a more obvious than usual rainbow effect, with bright areas breaking up into little red-green-blue rainbows. The effect is always a potential issue for any single-chip DLP projector, but some are more prone than others to showing it, and some people are more sensitive to seeing it. With the TW762 I saw the rainbows in both data and video screens much more often than with most DLP projectors. Anyone who is sensitive to the effect, as I am, may well find them annoying for either data or video sessions that last more than a few minutes.

The TW762's audio quality is better than average for its weight class. The 8-watt mono speaker is both loud enough to fill a small to mid-size conference room and high enough quality to be easily understandable.

Note too that the projector offers 3D support with DLP-Link glasses. As with all DLP-link projectors, there's some question about how practical this can be. The glasses sell for $70 or more each, and the 3D support is somewhat limited, so the projector won't work directly with a Blu-ray player, for example. However, I tested the 3D by connecting to a Blu-ray player through the Optoma 3D-XL ($400 street, 4 stars) external converter, and the 3D certainly works.

HD ready projector launched by Acer

The Acer K330 is being marketed as a portable projector, according to the Inquirer, thanks to its small size and weight of just 1.24kg. It also features a 'Presentation to Go' application, which allows users to open office and multimedia files easily.

But in making the device portable, the designers have been careful not to sacrifice the picture quality. The K330 is the first LED powered projector to come with a 500 lumen projector lamp, and the manufacturers estimate the light will last for up to 20,000 hours, using just 1W in standby mode.

It has a resolution of 1280x1880 and comes with Acer Colorsafe II technology. The gadget also benefits from a contrast ration of 4,000:1.

However, to take advantage of the 3D option on the projector, consumers will need to purchase the 3D glasses in addition to the device itself.

In terms of connectivity, there is the option of using HDMI, component and composite inputs, as well as PC compatibility, optional WiFi and an SD card slot and USB port to bypass the need for a separate device altogether.
