Epson's E-TORL puts projectors in a new green light

The Epson Twin Optimized Reflection Lamp (E-TORL) is probably the projector industry’s most significant innovation in lamp design since the arrival of the modern multimedia projector. Pioneered by Epson in 2005 and found in almost every Epson projector today, the E-TORL is a projector lamp that features an elliptically-shaped reflector with an additional sub reflector unit to achieve an unprecedented 20% improvement in light projection efficiency. This results in lower power consumption, cooler operation and longer operational life compared to conventional projector lamps.

A projector lamp is basically composed of a burner element and a reflector. Conventional projector lamps feature a semi-circular, parabolic reflector shape that does not efficiently reflect light generated from the lamp’s burner element toward the projector’s optical system. This is because the curvature of the conventional lamp’s reflector allows a significant portion of the light to be reflected away from the light path of the optical unit, where it is lost as heat. If a projector’s light source loses too much light through such inefficiency, the picture it produces will appear dim. With the goal of radically improving the efficiency of a projector’s lamp, the Epson visual instrument research team developed a completely new design for the projector lamp system, resulting in the E-TORL.

In the E-TORL, the parabolic reflector has been replaced with an elliptically shaped one that reflects light beams to the optical system far more efficiently. In addition, Epson engineers added a sub-reflector unit to the E-TORL, which further improves efficiency by collecting and channeling the light from the area in centre of the lamp into the optics.

The E-TORL’s innovative new design is smaller than a standard lamp, yet it runs cooler, more efficiently, and brighter. The reduced size allows Epson to shrink the projector’s optical engine, resulting in an overall reduction in the projector’s size.

Elliptically shaped reflector. The lamp and the sub-reflector unit.Brilliant Results

The E-TORL design allows almost 100% of the light from the lamp to be collected and channeled through to the projector’s optical system. This gives the E-TORL an overall improvement in efficiency of 20% when compared to a conventional lamp, helping users to save on power costs. In practical terms, this higher efficiency means that an E-TORL can provide an output of 170 watts, versus 136 watts from an ordinary lamp with the same input.

The E-TORL runs cooler than a standard lamp of similar wattage because the design incorporates an air gap between the reflector and the burner. This cooler operation also enables further benefits: 1) this means that the cooling fan of the projector does not need to spin as fast, further reducing power consumption.

In addition, Hella Electronics' products supplied for the new vehicle from the company's San Jose Iturbide manufacturing plant include daylight-running-lamp printed circuit boards, which are part of an energy-saving module.

"Hella's relationship with Volkswagen and the VW Beetle dates back to the first Beetle prototype in 1935 and the start of mass production in 1945," said Ignacio Moreno, CEO of Hella Lighting for the Americas and president of Hella's Corporate Center Mexico. "Our lighting partnership with Volkswagen has continued on a variety of Beetle models over the years."

Volkswagen officially started production of the new Beetle in July at its Puebla plant during ceremonies attended by Mexican President Felipe Calderon and Hubert Waltl, board member for Production and Logistics at Volkswagen Passenger Cars.

Hella began development of its lighting programs for the new 2012 Beetle in 2009. To develop the tail lamps, members of Hella's engineering and product development staff in North America led a core design team located in Lippstadt, Germany. The headlamps were designed by an engineering team in the Czech Republic.

Hella will be providing halogen and HID versions of the headlamp for use in the Americas and Europe. Hella's halogen headlamp uses a standard reflector system using an HB2/H4 bulb for high and low beams. Daytime running-lamp and position-lamp functions are achieved by using one double filament bulb. Production of the halogen version of the headlamps for the new Beetle started earlier this year at a Hella plant in Mexico City.

Hella's HID headlamp consists of a bi-xenon projector using an innovative 25-watt burner - an energy-efficient solution that offers savings of 30W when compared to halogen-bulb solutions. Hella also uses LED technology to generate daytime running-lamp and position-light functions. The LED arrangement gives the headlamp a distinctive appearance.

One of many Hella lamps on the new Beetle is a front side-marker single-function lamp. Located in the front fender of the vehicle near the wheels, the side-marker is a single lamp that uses standard bulb technology.

The rear-reflectors are a safety features that reflect light, enabling other motorists to see a parked vehicle or a vehicle driving without the tail lamps on. It is integrated into the rear bumper. Hella also provides VW with a six-function tail lamp. Stop and tail-lamp functions feature a dual filament 21/5-watt incandescent bulb. The turn signal and backup lights use standard bulbs. The side reflex reflector is incorporated in the lens of the tail lamp. The side marker function (only required for the US market), is achieved by using a single LED. This function assures basic visibility of the vehicle at night.

The 2012 Beetle's center high-mounted stop lamp is comprised of 18 LEDs. It is mounted above the trunk lid in the rear for the vehicle.

Volkswagen's Puebla plant is the largest automotive facility in Mexico and one of the Volkswagen Group's biggest vehicle manufacturing plants. Puebla supplies vehicles for both North and South America, as well as Europe, and has a workforce of more than 15,000.

Epson PH eyes mass market for new 3D projectors

The two 3D home theater projectors – the Epson EH-TW6000 and the Epson EH-TW8000 — will be available starting December 2011.

Although the units have a price tag of P160,000 and P119,000, respectively, the company said their cost is still much cheaper compared to existing 3D projectors which are being sold from P300,000 to P500,000.

The 3D models are just two of the 17 new projectors which Epson announced in the Manila leg of the company’s largest-ever projector launch in Southeast Asia. The other models are targeted at different parts of the market such as schools and businesses.

The EH-TW6000 and EH-TW8000 are Epson’s first-ever 3D projectors. With a form factor that is slimmer compared to other 3D projectors, the units can be used in the homes.

By upgrading projector shutter systems from 240Hz to 480Hz, the company said it was able to make the technology viable for home use, as well as solve a common 3D concern with slower projectors (240Hz) on maintaining image brightness and picture quality.

Epson said the time is already ripe for the launch of the 3D projectors with the dramatic increase in the amount of 3D content being produced, as well as the more mature level of 3D as a technology.

A feature which Epson officials highlighted during the launch was the ability of the Epson EH-TW8000 to convert 2D movies to 3D.

The Epson EH-TW6000, the more affordable alternative to the higher-end EH-TW8000, meanwhile has the brightest 3D images in its class as it shares the same image engine of the EH-TW8000 with a 480 hertz refresh rate.

Although it lacks the 2D to 3D conversion capability and the advanced Epson image processing technologies like Super Resolution Technology and Frame Interpolation that the EH-TW8000 offers, it has a pair of 10 watt high quality speakers and auto color mode.

Also at the launch event, held at the Dusit Hotel in Makati City, the Japanese tech firm also unveiled the Epson MG-850HD – the world’s first Apple device HD projector — which allows owners of iPhones, iPads or iPods to dock their devices onto the projector for playback of movies, photos or music.

The projector also features built-in 10W speakers, and a brightness of 2800 lumens, a contrast ratio of 3,000:1, and a resolution of up to 1280×800 (WXGA) — along with a microphone port, for those who would like to use the projector for karaoke or business presentations.

Acer C110 Pico Projector review

Joining companies, families and superskinny models, personal tech too seems to be following the downsizing and belt-tightening trend. All our regular consumer gadgets – phones, laptops, cameras and tablets – are becoming smaller, thinner and most importantly, more efficient. The projector market too has seen a fair bit of flab being trimmed from their top performers, and today you can get a Full HD projector that comes in a zippable carry bag and weighs less than 2 kgs.

It's also no wonder that projectors themselves are adapting to the prevalent anorexia, and Pico, or handheld projectors are becoming the latest tool of choice for people on the move. Acer recently launched the C110 Pico Projector in the Indian market, which is aimed at making the boardroom portable.

It's actually quite surprising how small the C110 is. It weighs just 175 grams, and with dimensions of 4.3x3.3 and a thickness of just under an inch, this could probably fit into your laptop bag, with a bit of a squeeze. The small black unit has a plastic exterior but despite being light doesn't feel too flimsy. While the top panel has a shiny finish, the edges are ribbed with a grille design. The controls are minimalist too, with just a single USB port at the rear and a focussing wheel on the side.

Unlike some of the other pico projectors available, like the BenQ Joybee projector, the C110 does not require an external power source – it both connects and charges through the USB cable. Also unlike some other pico projectors, the C110 has an LED lamp, which means longer lamplife – estimated at 20,000 hours - and less power consumption. These are both great positives if you're going to use the projector with a laptop running on battery power. The projector can also connect up to an Android tablet with a USB port, which makes its portability a lot more appealing.

Connecting the C110 was easy as pie. I plugged it into a Windows 7 laptop, and I was immediately prompted to run the built-in software. Once that was installed, I was given options to choose my preferred resolution, and I was set to go. The USB cable that comes with the C110 has dual-USBs at one end, and if you plug both into your computer you get a brighter display. Unfortunately the projector does not support Apple devices, so you won't be able to connect your Mac to it.

The projector comes with a handy optional foldable screen, which you'll have to buy separately. It opens up to a 25-inch wrinkle-free display and doesn't require a stand, which is great for small group presentations. Acer claims that using the screen also increases image brightness by 200 per cent and contrast by 300 per cent. The C110 has a contrast ratio of 1000:1, and brightness of 50 lumens but using the screen can pump it up to 100 lumens. I played back some videos on the screen and off a wall, and the results were significantly different. The colours on the screen were visibly richer and there was more saturation and detail. On a wall, the projector offers a maximum screen size of 60-inches. At that size, I didn't notice any visible fringing on the edges.

Although the C110 is primarily for business needs, it could potentially work as an entertainment device to watch a movie or videos with a few friends. The projector's maximum resolution is 1280x800 and is not bad for a movie night. A few of the videos I had streamed were fine on the sharpness and colour, but there was quite a bit of shake between fast moving frames. When I cranked the screen size all the way up to maximum, this shake was even more magnified, and can be quite disrupting if you're watching an action scene.

While I wouldn't recommend it for home users, the C110 is a really handy little device to carry around with you, if you travel frequently and you have a lot of group meetings. The fact that it doesn't require a power source and that the foldable screen can fit into your laptop bag can make it a useful addition to your briefcase.

'Breaking Dawn' to devour three new family films

Multiplexes will be stuffed with new family releases over the Thanksgiving holiday, but the latest installment in the "Twilight" franchise will likely feast on the most ticket sales yet again.

"The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1" opened to an impressive $138 million last weekend, and the film could rake in another $60 million from Wednesday through Sunday, according to those who have seen prerelease audience surveys.

Meanwhile, three new PG-rated films, all of which have earned exceedingly positive reviews, are hitting theaters Wednesday. "The Muppets," starring Jason Segel and Jim Henson's popular gang of puppets, is expected to collect about $45 million by Sunday. "Arthur Christmas," a 3-D computer animated holiday tale, is expected to gross $15 million to $18 million in the same time frame. And "Hugo," director Martin Scorsese's 3-D film about an orphan living in a 1930s Paris train station, will likely bring in only $10 million to $13 million for the five days.

"The Muppets" is returning to the big screen for the first time since 1999, when "Muppets from Space" debuted with a lackluster $4.8 million. Co-written by Segel, the new film is generating interest from children and adults nostalgic for the 1970s television program "The Muppets Show," which featured Kermit, Miss Piggy and their pals.

The movie cost Walt Disney Studios about $45 million to produce. It will open in Mexico on Friday.

"Arthur Christmas" was made by Sony Pictures Animation and the British animation house Aardman Animations, the production company behind the popular Wallace and Gromit movies, TV show and commercials. This marks the first collaboration between the two studios.

The movie, which cost Sony about $100 million to produce, is about how Santa's son learns how to deliver presents worldwide on Christmas Eve. "Arthur Christmas" is going after a younger audience than "Hugo" or "Muppets," hoping to capitalize on the interest of kids ages 7 to 11.

Though audience polling indicates "Arthur" may have a soft opening, the studio is hopeful that it will follow in the footsteps of its recent summer release "The Smurfs." Early tracking had projected that the animated movie featuring miniature blue cartoon characters would have a weak opening, but it debuted with a surprisingly strong $35 million in July and ultimately raked in over $550 million worldwide.

Overseas, "Arthur Christmas" has already opened in five foreign markets, where it has so far collected $9 million. The film is performing especially well in the United Kingdom, where it has sold about $7.6 million in tickets. This weekend, it will play in a total of 25 countries, including Japan and Australia.

"Hugo," an adaptation of the best-selling children's book "The Invention of Hugo Cabret," is playing in 1,200 theaters -- about 2,000 less than the other new movies in wide release this weekend. Rob Moore, Paramount's vice chairman, said the studio opted to open the film in fewer theaters because it is hoping strong word-of-mouth will propel it to box-office success in the coming weeks.

"Instead of putting everything into this very crowded Thanksgiving, we decided to wait and use the great reviews to push and expand the movie into December," said Moore.

The film was initially set for release by Sony on Dec. 9, but financier Graham King was adamant that it bow over the long Thanksgiving weekend. Because the studio already had plans to debut "Arthur Christmas" over the holiday, King moved the film from Sony to Paramount Pictures.

Scorsese's first family picture was financed by King, who said it cost less than $150 million to produce. Another person familiar with the film's budget, who asked not to be identified so as not to damage business relationships, said it cost around $170 million. Paramount is releasing the picture for a fee and paying for the film's prints and advertising.

In limited release, the Weinstein Co. is releasing two possible awards contenders. "My Week with Marilyn," starring Michelle Williams as the tragic Marilyn Monroe, will open Wednesday in 12 markets and expand to 244 theaters Friday. The film, which cost about $10 million to make, will also debut in the United Kingdom this weekend.

Meanwhile, the company's silent black-and-white silent movie "The Artist" will debut in two theaters in New York and two more in Los Angeles on Friday. Although the movie has already collected more than $16 million in France -- where its lead actors hail from -- it remains to be seen if the unique $14-million production will resonate with American audiences.

Digital movie projectors bringing end to Hollywood's film era

The 122-year reign of the celluloid 35-millimeter film projector is about to come to an end.

In just two months, digital will overtake film as the predominant movie projector technology in the world's cinemas, according to a study released this week by IHS. It will be the first time since the advent of the motion picture in 1889 that film projectors will be used to screen a minority of movies.

The most amazing thing about the transition is not how long film stuck around, but just how dramatic and rapid the shift to digital projectors was. Film projectors were in more than 99% of theaters as recently as 2004 and 85% in 2009. That number slid to 68% last year, and by the end of next year, film will be present in just 37% of cinemas.

In 2015, IHS says film will be relegated to "niche" status, used in just 17% of movie theaters worldwide.

The blockbuster 3-D movie's release in late 2009 sparked a rapid increase in digital projector purchases, since its three-dimensional effects couldn't be viewed with a celluloid film projector. Not wanting to miss out on the highest-grossing movie of all time, theaters were quick to upgrade their technology.

"The release of Avatar represented the pivotal moment for digital cinema," said David Hancock, head of film and cinema research at IHS. "Before Avatar, digital represented only a small portion of the market. This single film has driven up demand for digital 3-D technology at the expense of traditional 35-mm celluloid."

Since then, movie theaters have been welcoming the rebirth of the 3-D movie, as they can often charge more money for the shows.

The transition has been especially noticeable in the United States, where IHS predicts there will be no more mainstream 35-mm film projector usage after 2013. Western Europe will reach that point by 2014, and as pressure builds from Hollywood studios that want to ship films in just one format, most of the rest of the world will likely be forced to say goodbye to film projectors the following year.

Though the majority of movies are still shown using film -- at least until January -- most Hollywood pictures have actually been shot using digital cameras for quite some time. Some traditionalists remain, of course. Star Trek director J.J. Abrams noted that he chose to shoot the movie using traditional film to capture a certain glare effect that digital cameras couldn't replicate.

Even though the film wasn't shot digitally, many people around the world still watched it on a digital projector. Soon, no matter how a Hollywood movie is captured, it will have to be digitized at some point.

That means demand for celluloid is rapidly declining. More than 13 billion feet of 35-mm film were sold globally in 2008, but that number is expected to sink to just 4 billion feet next year, IHS said.

What's even more worrisome for celluloid producers is that the cost of making it is soaring due to the rising price of silver, a key raw material in the production of film. IHS predicts the major celluloid manufacturers -- Kodak and Fuji -- could be consolidated down to just one by 2015.

Of course, film will never completely go away. Art-house cinemas, particularly the roughly 3,000 publicly funded ones in Western Europe, will help keep film alive. Older films that were never digitally transferred will live on there.

Everyone wants to meet, but not on the same terms

At least two Alexandria City Council members continue to ask Mayor Jacques M. Roy to have representatives of his administration attend council meetings to give reports, make presentations and take questions.

For the past nine months, Roy has supplemented his staff's written responses to council agenda items with a televised briefing held Fridays before Tuesday council meetings.

At the mayor's briefings, staff members deliver reports, including PowerPoint presentations made by Public Works Director T.W. Thompson at the past three briefings.

At last Tuesday's council meeting, a video of Thompson's presentation on code enforcement services was shown on a projector in the Council Chambers. The video included the slides from Thompson's presentation, but not the audio of Thompson speaking.

Council President Roosevelt L. Johnson and District 2 Councilwoman Mitzi Gibson said they would have preferred that Thompson make the presentation in person.

"I would hope and think someone from the administration would have been here to give this report," Johnson said.

District 4 Councilman Harry B. Silver said there are plenty of opportunities for council members to view the reports.

They can attend the briefings live -- Silver, Chuck Fowler and Jim Villard typically attend -- or watch them as they are rebroadcast on Channel 4, the city's government-access channel.

Silver said he couldn't attend the latest briefing in person, so he watched it on Channel 4.

Roy started the pre-council meeting briefings in February in response to a perceived "lack of decorum and civility" at City Council meetings.

"We've had to make a hard choice," Roy said at the time. "We would rather be in the meetings ... (but) we will not do it when there is not decorum and civility."

Roy has urged council members to attend the Friday briefings "to engage in the discussion," particularly those council members whose committees have items coming up on the next council meeting agenda.

"This way," Roy said at the time, "the chairs can take back the information, the public can witness the exchange, and with the additional reports given before the full or 'general' council meeting -- and available as the basis for discussion at the Friday exchange -- we will be that much more informed."

Panasonic AE7000E/AR1000E Projectors

Panasonic ducked by the Gizmodo offices to give me some hands-on time with its new ultra-bright and 3D home theatre projectors. They’re not pitched as TV replacements, but for those who want a 100-inch display without breaking the bank.

I’d already covered the basics of the AE7000E the other day; it’s a 3D-capable projector with an asking price of $4179. Glasses for the AE7000 cost $169. It was raised in the comments on the original story as to why Panasonic’s gone for comparatively expensive active shutter glasses rather than passive ones, and the answer I was given was that a passive 3D projector would require double the number of lenses, significantly expanding the cost of the overall unit.

In terms of image quality, things were great in 2D. I’m in the camp that gets made nauseous by 3D all too quickly, so could only stand a brief bit of 3D projection, but I’m happy to say that it at least worked well, if 3D is your thing. You’ll ideally want a darkened room to make the effect work best.

The same isn’t true of Panasonic’s other projector, the AR100E, which is still a home projector, but one designed with home sensibilities in mind. Its contrast ratio is a little lower than the AE7000 at only 50,000:1, but its brightness rating is much higher at 2800 lumens. There’s a reason for this; it’s designed to be used in home environments where you might not be able to get things perfectly dark. Most people’s living rooms, in other words.

Panasonic demonstrated the effectiveness of this with the Blu-Ray version of Pearl Harbour. I’m told that it will also display good movies, but that aside, it did a good job of presentation with the lights up, and an even better one when they were dipped. The AR100E goes on sale in a couple of weeks with an asking price of $3079. Replacement lamp pricing for both models should come in at around $650.

Optoma Launches GameTime 750 3D 720p Projector in the UK

Designed for use with today’s top 3D games consoles and gaming PCs, the GT750 home entertainment projector delivers a massive 3D experience right into your living room. The integrated 3D-XL technology allows the GT750 to connect to all these devices without the need for additional hardware. Combining specialist optics with bright images, crystal clarity and exceptional light and shade detail.

Directly compatible with 3D broadcast signals such as Sky 3D, Blu-ray 3D players and 3D games from the Sony PS3 and Microsoft Xbox 360; the GT750 generates greater than 100” 3D projected images to create an experience that is not possible with the smaller screen of a 3D TV. Larger images will fill your peripheral vision, emphasising the effect of 3D and maintaining the utmost image clarity with a 720p resolution. The integrated 3D-XL technology allows the GT750 to connect to all these devices without the need for additional hardware.

The GT750 has a “short-throw” lens, which means you can get up to a 120” image from less than 2 metres away. Having the projector closer to the screen leaves more space to move around when playing the Nintendo Wii, Xbox Kinect and PlayStation 3 Move and eliminates the shadow that might have made your motion-controlled gaming impossible. Motion-controlled gaming aside, having a short throw lens also allows you to watch films and sport in rooms that would have previously not been able to facilitate a large projected image size.

The GT750 has 3500 ANSI lumens of brightness providing enough light for gaming even in a room with ambient lighting. Designed to be used in the same way as your conventional TV, the high brightness of the GT750 can be used for television and film watching on a frequent basis.

As most movies are shot at 24 frames per second (FPS), the GT750 preserves the purity of the original image by accepting HD sources at 24 FPS ensuring the image is shown as the director intended.

Powerful 10 Watt stereo speakers are built into the GT750, which make spontaneous film screenings and gaming sessions either at home, or at a friend’s house really convenient; extremely portable in comparison to other AV solutions. Though, you’re not limited to 10W, with an Audio Out connection you can hook the GT750 up to a subwoofer and add that extra bass essential for replicating a cinema experience.

Full HD 3D LCD projector launched by Panasonic

Panasonic has launched a full HD 3D LCD home theatre projector, designed to deliver some of the best quality images in a home environment.

The PT-AE7000E features enhanced image brightness, contract and quality to deliver smooth playback in both 2D and 3D environments. This is achieved with 2,000 lumens of brightness, a 300,000:1 contrast ratio and full 1080p resolution.

When it comes to projecting images in 3D, the device is able to take 2D sources and convert it into five different 3D modes. Alternatively, original 3D material can also be displayed.

Chris Maw, product marketing manager from Panasonic's business systems group, commented: “We believe this product is the ideal solution for those consumers who are after cinema-quality movie or sports viewing in their home on a super-sized screen of up to 200-inches.”

He added that the device was developed in collaboration with Panasonic Hollywood Laboratory engineers who have played key roles in the establishment of industry standards for 3D.

Meanwhile, viewers have the option of three HDMI inputs to help them switch easily between different HD sources, while the projector lamp will deliver an impressive 5,000 hours of viewing in eco mode.

Dell M110 Ultra Mobile Projector

The advancement of miniaturization technology has resulted in many things becoming far smaller without sacrificing on performance – and the same can be said of the projector. Even until now, projectors are still rather bulky in size, but then again they certainly have shed plenty of weight over the years, and at least you need not wait until the bulb cools down completely before turning off the main power in select models. What happens when you take a shrinking ray and point it towards a projector? Why, you end up with the Dell M110 Ultra Mobile Projector, of course!

The Dell M110 Ultra Mobile Projector is said to be more than just a projector, as it is a truly portable media hub that can see action either at home or at the office. It will tip the scales at a mere 0.8lbs, but despite the relatively small size, do not be deceived by its super small package – the M110 is still able to pack a punch!

Connectivity options are aplenty – you get VGA, HDMI and USB inputs, allowing you to present your fair share of multimedia slideshows as well as run audio-visual applications directly from your digital camera, DVD or DVR player, video game console, and perhaps select mobile devices – without having to own a computer or a notebook. Want to take the wireless route? That is not a problem, just add the optional wireless dongle and you are good to go.

The 1GB of internal memory might not sound like much, but it can definitely be augmented to 32GB thanks to the presence of a microSD memory card slot. As for audio, I would assume the traditional weakness of projectors (portable or otherwise) will remain – that is, the integrated 1W speaker would not amount to much – perhaps it is good enough for sit-in movies, but other than that, you might want to hook it up to an external speaker system. Dell claims that the M110 is good enough to work in a brightly lighted room (with ambient lighting), where the mercury-free LED technology used inside the M110 projector can deliver up to 20,000 hours of service sans a LED lamp or bulb replacement.

A sub-$60 home theater projector on Black Friday?

Black Friday is usually a great time to pick up technology products at a rock-bottom price. But it's also a time where it's pretty easy to get snared by tech that looks like a good -- or even unbelievable -- buy, but whose performance means it's not a bargain at any price. One example that we gave in a post last week were tablet computers selling in the $100 price range, and sure enough, the Kohl's Black Friday circular that leaked the other day had a couple of those. The ad also featured the Discovery Expedition Wonderwall Entertainment Projector as an "early bird" special at just a penny under $60. We saw this one all over the place last Black Friday, and it looks like we are in for a re-run, as it was also included in the Staples Black Friday ad that leaked on Wednesday -- and for even less ($49.99). So, what's the deal? Can you really find happiness -- and anything regarding acceptable picture quality -- in a projector that's this inexpensive? Join us after the jump to find out.

Let's cut to the chase: Anyone expecting to get the performance of a typical home theater projector or a portable digital projector is in for a let-down. The specs are a giveaway. The resolution isn't exactly high-def; heck, at 480 by 240 pixels, it's not exactly standard def (720 by 480 pixels), either. Second, the light source is a common 50-watt Halogen bulb -- not the high light-output projector lamps used in most projectors.

So take that low-res image and blow it up to 90 inches (the maximum screen size promised by some sellers) and what do you get? Right. Given the lamp brightness, the quoted maximum throw distance of 6 feet seems a tad optimistic as well, even in a pitch-black room.

Those owners are ones that ignored the promises of this projector and instead dealt with its realities: Keep the room dark, the wall light (or tack up a sheet), and the image size reasonable, and, yes, it can deliver some viewing fun -- especially for kids for movies or videogames.

If you think that the Discovery Expedition Wonderwall projector is something you could see under the tree, there's not much need to get up early for it. While the price at Staples is a little bit better, the early bird at Kohl's wont score much of a bargain as it is for sale there right now for just $10 more.

Second projector in an iPhone case launched

A projector designed to be used with an iPhone has been launched by Texas Instruments and Brookstone.

The iPhone Pocket Projector has been made slim enough to fit within a cover for the phone itself and allows users to display their phone's content on a 50-inch diagonal screen to share videos and pictures with friends.

But this is not the first projector to take advantage of a cover for the smartphone. Earlier this year, Japanese accessory maker Century developed the Monolith case, which hides a projector and a battery pack inside the case to provide a level of protection for the smartphone while making it easy to carry a projector with you.

The Texas Instruments device offers a resolution of 640x360 and is powered by a 15 lumen projector lamp. The resolution is the same as the Japanese model, although its lighting outstrips the 12 lumens provided by the Century device.

However, with both gadgets offering relatively low light strength, they are both advisable for use in a dark environment.

They also both benefit from a rechargeable battery pack, meaning that neither will drain the battery on the iPhone itself.

Texas Instruments and Brookstone debut iPhone Pocket Projector case

Electronics giant Texas Instruments (TI) and specialty retailer Brookstone have announced the Pocket Projector for iPhone 4, a case for the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S that incorporates TI's Pico projector technology to offer on-the-go video projection.

The $230 Pocket Projector is similar in design to many iPhone battery cases--your phone slides into the case, which hosts a USB-chargeable 2100mAh battery--except that the top of the case doesn't wrap around your iPhone. This means less protection, but it also makes it easy to quickly slip your phone into or out of the bulky case.

Near the iPhone's headphone jack at the top of the Pocket Projector is the projector's lens, powered by a 15-lumen-LED projection lamp and TI's DLP Pico projector technology. On the back of the case is a small, 0.5-Watt speaker. The companies claim the projector can produce an image of up to 50 inches (measured diagonally) with a 640- by 360-pixel native display resolution; a small dial lets you adjust the projector's focus. The Pocket Projector works with any app that supports dock-connector video out, including the stock Videos, Photos, and YouTube apps, along with third-party apps that specifically offer this feature.

Over the weekend, I spent some hands-on time with the Pocket Projector, and I found it to be easy to use. As with Apple's video-output cables and adapters for the iPhone, once you place your iPhone in the Pocket Projector, so that the latter makes a good connection with the phone's dock-connector port, any app that supports video-out automatically sends video to the projector--you don't have to change settings or otherwise activate the feature. I was able to achieve the claimed 50-inch image from a distance of about eight feet.

Once focused, the Pocket Projector's image is pretty clear, although a dark room is required for the best image quality, and small or thin-font text in Keynote presentations can be difficult to read thanks to the projector's low resolution. I found the Pocket Projector to be most effective for watching video and for displaying photo slideshows to a group. The internal speaker doesn't play very loud, but you can use external speakers by connecting a standard 3.5mm audio cable to your iPhone's headphone jack--because of the placement of the projector's lens, you just need to be careful that the cable doesn't block the lens. You can also use the Pocket Projector as a backup battery, much like the aforementioned battery cases.

Casio XJ-H1700 and XJ-H1750 DLP Projectors

Building on its 2nd generation light engine, Casio has expanded its Pro High Brightness Series with two new projectors. The XJ-H1700 and XJ-H1750 both have a 4000 lumen output and feature laser and LED hybrid light source technology offering lamp-free, eco-friendly data projection at a fraction of the cost of traditional projectors. Casio's laser & LED hybrid light source combines blue laser light and a fluorescent element to generate a high output of green light. The green light, blue laser light, and the light emitted by a red LED are projected through a DLP chip which, in turn, is passed through the projection lens to form an image. This technology achieves an increase in color spectrum compared with a mercury lamp, while lowering a projector's total cost of ownership and maximizing investment.

Additionally, Casio's Pro projectors are DLP 3D ready and can display 3D content from a 3D capable computer. Professionals can change the bland world of presentations by engaging audiences on an entirely new level with vivid and exciting images that jump of the screen -- essentially bringing the presentation to life.

Equipped with a network connection via wireless and wired LAN capabilities, the XJ-H1700 and XJ-H1750 incorporate enhanced audio features such as a large output speaker. From the biggest theaters to the smallest rooms, Casio understands the need to communicate effectively. Therefore, Casio has increased audio power to 10 watts for the Pro line to ensure that sound travels in every type of setting. They are also fitted with an RGB-Out port, multiple audio inputs and an audio output for connection to a separate audio system.

Furthermore, the XJ-H1750 is Interactive Whiteboard ready which enables users to transform any surface into an interactive workspace. The optional pen and software allow presenters to write and annotate on the screen or switch to "mouse" mode and control the PC, a perfect tool to incorporate in training sessions, lectures, meetings, etc.

Building a terrible killing machine

Hyper-kinetic presenter Tony Robinson and a team of experts travel to Mametz, a famous battlefield in World War I, in search of a secret tunnel and a massive flamethrower lost for almost a century.

The Livens Flame Projector, strictly the Livens Large Gallery Flame Projector, was used on the first day of the Battle of the Somme in 1916 and only once after that in 1917. Nothing of it exists today though Robinson is determined to find remnants of it on the Somme battlefield near Mametz.

With historian Peter Barton and archeologist Tony Pollard, the bustling Robinson is determined to recover what's left and with the help of the British Royal Engineers build a working replica. The Projector took just 25 weeks to produce from the planning stage to actual deployment. It was almost 10m long, over a metre wide and required a crew of seven trained men.

War diaries kept by officers at the time indicate that on June 28, 1916, about 200 British troops from the Royal Engineers gathered in great secrecy near Mametz. They worked underground in secret tunnels out of sight of German lines.

The weapon was powered by air pressure. Once it reached a certain level, the head (monitor) of the weapon was pushed out of the ground. A mixture of kerosene and diesel was ignited and shot towards the German lines.

How effective the weapon was is not known but war historians speculate that where it was used, it was spectacularly effective.

PC Advisor's top five tweets of the week

There's been plenty of tech issues for Twitter users to tweet about over the past seven days, from Nokia launching a free Wi-Fi network in London to Ofcom's revelation that 27 percent of the UK can't get access to 3G signal from all of the UK's five major mobile networks. Here's our five favourites tweets of the week.

Nokia announced this week it had joined forces with Spectrum Interactive to bring free Wi-Fi to London. Under the trial, which began this week and will run until the end of the year, 26 streets across the city, including Oxford Street, Tottenham Court Road and Sloane Square, will offer Wi-Fi connections of 'up to' 20Mbps thanks to equipment installed in street-side phone boxes owned by Spectrum Interactive. Users can simply locate the Wi-Fi network on their device and then accept the terms and conditions before they begin browsing, there is no need to register to use the service.

"Great news for the capital. Slightly annoying for the rest of the UK. 'Nokia and Spectrum Interactive bring free Wi-Fi to London," we tweeted.

However, while the UK's capital is being given free Wi-Fi, Ofcom was quick to point out that 27 percent of homes and businesses in the UK can't receive 3G signal for all of the UK's five major networks. The announcement was part of research that featured in the regulator's first 'Communications Infrastructure' report which must be submitted to the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport every three years.

Deputy news editor CarrieSkinner said: "27 percent of UK can't receive 3G signal from all five of the UK's major mobile networks".

If you run a business from your home, you may wish to run your personal and professional PCs and laptops separately. So we got our Helproom expert to explain just how to run two networks from a single connection.
"Ever wanted to run two networks from the same router. Here's how you do it," we said in a tweet.

Kodak' recently introduced its Hero series of multifunction printers. You'll pay a bit more up front for these smart looking all-in-ones - but you'll get your money back in the long run. The Kodak Hero 9.1 and its sibling printers are cheap to run whether you calculate it by cost per page or total ink replacement.

"Kodak Hero 9.1 review - a high-end all-in-one printer that could pay for itself in two years," said Editor MattJEgan.
Tiny add-on turns iPhone into hand projector, throws 25-inch screen from 1 meter

We absolutely love this tiny projector that plugs into an iPhone's docking slot and can throw a 25-inch image about a meter away. The projector, which has gone on sale in Japan and China, weighs just 32 grams and is about the size of half an iPhone. Its tiny LED lamp runs off the phone's battery and generates 320-by-240 resolution at a brightness of 10 lumens.

At a Sneak Preview of the Spiffed-Up Version

It is when watching the movie Titanic in 3D that one appreciates anew the obsessive dedication to visual splendor, period detail and overall cinematic majesty that drives James Cameron to be the maker of not merely movies, but giant epics for the ages.

A special screening was held recently at Paramount to give a sneak peak of some of the three-dimensionalized footage of the 1997 blockbuster, the entirety of which will be released in theaters in April 2012 as Titanic 3D. Whatever one's usual taste or preference in filmed content, one simply has to admit that this movie looks fantastic, it's a hell of a piece of (dark) fairy-tale storytelling and the addition of that third visual dimension makes it in an even more immersive trip.

Cameron, along with his producer Jon Landau, spoke to the assembled after the roughly half hour showing of select scenes, and he was right on the money when telling the audience that adding the third visual dimension "is an enhancement even to regular, intimate, dramatic scenes," and not only to the obviously huge physical shots -- ship hurtling through the ocean, gigantic engine room shafts turning, the vessel horrifically sinking head down into the sea. All the shots, including those showing the romantic tension between Jack and Rose or between Rose and Caledon Hockley, or the longer interludes showing off the ship's ornate decor and the upper-class dandies occupying said parlors, dining areas and ballrooms became even more vital and lived in with the 3D effect. And scenes such as Jack and Rose dancing wildly to Celtic folk music with the salty, working class crew down below; the unlikely new couple soaring high over the nighttime ocean atop the ship's bow; and Rose wading through waist deep water in the corridors became scenes of pure action.

During the Q & A afterward, Cameron seemed both congenial and good-humored in his banter. He started off with a quip that this 3D re-release provided "A good way to wring applause out of a 15 year old film." He then told of his longtime fascination with marine sciences and archaeology and how these interests dovetailed with his hobby of diving, leading up to his own explorations of the Titanic wreck and his desire to tell a story "working backwards," from the present day knowledge of a great ship at the bottom of the ocean, to a living, breathing, group of human beings with varied lives who boarded that vessel for one of the most infamous voyages of all time.

While he takes pride in his hiring of historians and other experts to recreate everything accurately, Cameron admitted that "rivet counters" in the audience could still probably find minute background details that were off.

After some techie talk of "4k digital masters," having shot in Super 35 (allowing extra height in the frame) and how even the new 2D version will look better, Cameron answered an audience member's comment about 3D films often looking annoyingly under-lit with a very short dissertation on why that often appears so. "Exhibitors turn down the projector lamps in the theaters in order to preserve expensive lamp bulbs, and they can't do that, in order to keep the proper level of lighting in most 3D films," he says.

The meticulous Cameron then explained that he and his producers make a point of speaking with all the major exhibitors and asking that they keep their projector lamp bulbs set to the proper and necessary level for his 3D releases. It is this kind of attention to visual detail that makes Cameron perhaps the unparalleled master of gigantic cinematic spectacle, highly enjoyable popcorn movies that even the most elite art film connoisseur can enjoy with gusto.
